Adam Lambert ready to jump past mere ‘Idol’ fame

“My message to you tonight is this. It doesn’t matter if you have money, success, fame or sex, it doesn’t mean much if it isn’t connected to love.” – Adam Lambert

Just like the lyrics from his final song, Adam Lambert is the 20th Century boy.

For his 71st performance and the second-to-last stop on his Glam Nation Tour, Adam Lambert delivered to his loyal fans at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood on Sunday night. In a sold-out performance of over 5,500 people, Adam Lambert is becoming a household name. Known for his debut on American Idol in May of 2009, you almost forget he didn’t win. Who did he lose to? Does it matter? No. What matters is Lambert using that national coverage to jump off into his own.

Lambert is far from a teenage-crush or a gay-only following, bringing in fans aged 5 to 90. I was surprised to see the diversity in the crowd. Lambert appeals to everyone. His theatrics and dress remind me of a cross between The Mad Hatter, Johnny Depp and David Bowie. It isn’t until he stops acting that you get to meet the wholesome, lovable kid behind the make-up, black fingernail polish, and elaborate costumes. Lambert’s love for the theater is obvious and he brings that on to the stage with him, accompanied by four dancers dressed in animal skins and painted like warriors, and a tight band of fellow 20th-century rockers. Lambert pushed the envelope with his sexual actions on stage by kissing a band member and stroking another. The lyrics in “Strut” sum it up: “I want to start a revolution/a type of personal solution/we all have got our own pollution/it’s all about the execution.”

Sharon Bunn came from North Carolina for the show, the fourth time she’s seen him, including three times back home. Bunn is 70 years old and compares him to Elvis Presley whom she saw perform live 40 years ago: “He has this animal magnetism just like Elvis did. You never get tired of seeing him. Once you see the concert you have to go again. He owns the stage.”

She might be right. Lambert definitely has the stage presence, the swagger, the dance moves and a voice that knocks you flat. His tone is so solid and deep and then he can still hit the falsettos that you can’t believe all of that comes out of him. Just by his looks alone he reminds me of Elvis Presley. Lambert performed his first official solo concert in February of this year — hard to believe. Many of the fans at the Hard Rock have seen Lambert more than once, some even seven times. At the rate his popularity is growing he’s going to hit the charts and be sticking around for a while.

Lambert opened the night with “Voodoo”, slinking down the stairs in a long purple robe, black tight pants and a top hat complete with feathers and a red “A”. He followed that song with “Down the Rabbit Hole” and when he played “Ring of Fire” the whole stage lit up silhouetting Lambert. He gave the audience “What Do You Want From Me” and “If I Had You”. For his finale he performed a song I can’t find anywhere. I believe it was “20th Century Boy” but I need my readers to help me here. Does anyone know the title?

Opening the show for Lambert was Alison Iraheta, a fellow Idol contestant that came in fourth on the show. Lambert has taken her under his wing and refers to her as a little sister. Sorry Alison I wasn’t impressed. As Simon Cowell would say, “It just wasn’t any good. You sound like you could be performing in a nightclub somewhere.” As for the bus drivers coming on stage and dancing — they were hilarious. I must also add that the crowd dancing between the two acts just electrified the atmosphere getting everyone ready to party with Lambert.

“The key to finding true love is finding yourself” — Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert is, by far, the greatest vocalist American Idol has ever produced.

In concert, at a sold-out Hard Rock Live Sunday night in Hollywood, Lambert's voice was an incredible instrument - pure, operatically strong, rich and resonant. As a singer he's grown greatly from the polarizing Californian who sometimes oversang on American Idol two seasons ago to impress judges for whom the big, screeching glory note is unfortunately all-important.

Post-Idol, Lambert, 28, now headlining his Glam Nation Tour with fellow Season Eight Idol finalist Allison Iraheta as his opening act, even improved on several songs from his current album, For Your Entertainment.

On a spare "Aftermath", for instance, the new acoustic arrangement stripped the once generic song of its overproduction and showcased the tender artistry of Lambert's voice. On considerably better material, such as "Sleepwalker" and the striking "Soaked", Lambert sang with confidence and the innate understanding of a lyric performer.

Whitney, Christina, Mariah, let Mr. Lambert show you how to really put across a song with feeling and finesse.

Pity, then, that Lambert's handlers lack similar confidence in their high-profile star. Apparently, little money from corporate was spent on this visually lackluster Glam Nation Tour.

The staging was, for the most part, minor and uninteresting. Laser lights that were considered cool in the days of ELO and Pink Floyd were about the sole extravagance and Pink Floyd did the light show better in 1977.

Worse, a video camera person wasn't employed so Lambert wasn't shown on screen. Only those near the stage could see him clearly. Less can be more, but at today's ticket prices ($52-$72.50 for this gig) it's not too much to ask for a view of the performer, especially one known for his flamboyance and showmanship.

We know Mr. Lambert isn't always fond of cameras - ahem - but this was ridiculous.

For the record, Lambert arrived on stage in a long, fringed jacket and feathered top hat for his three-part medley of "Voodoo", a dance track from a remix download, "Down the Rabbit Hole", an iTunes bonus cut, and an Idol highlight, "Ring of Fire", which was stripped of its exotica.

But Lambert doesn't escape without some blame. He performed for barely 70 minutes and, unlike the energetic Iraheta, wasn't on stage the entire time. A few too many songs were abbreviated and, unlike some dates where he sang covers of "Mad World" and "Whole Lotta Love" during the encore, Hard Rock fans only got one song at the end, a passable take on T. Rex's 1973 oldie, "20th Century Boy".

The spitfire Iraheta, 18, would also prove a more natural conversationalist on stage, with patter far beyond her years. ``You look back and go, man, I went through that in my life,'' the whiskey-voiced dynamo announced before performing Scars.

Iraheta, who also improved upon her overproduced debut album with spikier, tougher arrangements of "Friday I'll Be Over U" and her Pat Benatar cover ("Heartbreaker") won over a crowd that seemed to range in age from 8 to 80.

Lambert, by comparison, offered stilted, scripted platitudes, such as this disingenuous bon mot: ``The key to true love and making it work is loving yourself.''

Daytime television viewers get enough of that talk. When Lambert chose to sing he was amazing. Next time, more of that and more show, please.

Adam Lambert Rocked Hard at Hard Rock!
Published October 01, 2010 by:
Kerry Kolsch
My Meeting with Adam Lambert
I have written a book about American Idol Season 8, penned numerous articles about Adam Lambert, attended American Idols Live 2009 and Rock My Town, but I had never even attempted to meet Adam Lambert. Autographs and meet and greets are usually not my thing. In fact the only autographs I have are Marilyn Monroe's. This week I was handed a unique opportunity.

I have been known to play a little poker and black jack at the Hollywood Seminole Hard Rock Casino so I inquired about getting tickets for the Glam Nation Tour. Since I was going to the Lambert concert my aunt asked me if could get Adam to autograph pictures to auction at a fund raising event she is hosting for "Voices", a charity for foster children. I was not only able to land seats close enough to see the color of Adam's eyes but was also able to get the limited and much coveted VIP meet and greet passes handed out by the casino host. Less than 20 people got them.

As I waited in line outside a curtained off meet and greet area I could see glimpses of Adam standing in the room dressed in black jeans, black Bowie shirt and wearing a small brimmed black hat. As I peeked through the curtain I saw Neil Lambert taking pictures at one point but he was not the photographer for my group. One woman without a pass tried to charm her way past the security. Another pretty dark haired, teen aged girl came up to the curtain, peeked in at Adam and burst into tears at the sight of him. Her friends had to escort her away.

The meet and greet had three groups. The first was the 25 people who bought a meet and greet from Adam's Fan Club. They seemed to get the most time with him. They got to chat with Lambert a bit and he signed what ever they brought him and could have pictures taken with their own cameras. The second group was from Entertainment 19 and I really did not pay attention to what kind of treatment they got because I went to the bar to get a drink. I was in the last and smallest group.

My group was the last to meet Adam. My intention was to get Adam to sign a picture and a magazine for charity but unfortunately at the last moment I found out the casino meet and greet did not allow autographs or personal photographs, not even one. I kind of regret that I was not even trying to take pictures when the curtain was open but as a lawyer I like to respect the rules of contract. Each meet and greet had it's own rules and the rules should be respected. I was with the high rollers and we got it for free. I respect that Adam spent more time with his fan club.

I was second in line in my group and as soon as I passed the black magic curtain and I was heading in his direction the event began to feel surreal. This was the person I had spent hundreds of hours writing about and now we were sharing the same air. Should I introduce my self? Hold up a copy of my book? 30 seconds is just not long enough for any kind for meaningful interaction so I just acted like any other person in line, I walked in, I posed to get a good picture, Adam thanked me for coming to the show and I was quickly whisked away. The casino host will have the pictures in two weeks.

My reflection on that brief meeting is that Adam is everything I expected him to be and more. Adam has a luminous radiation off stage that he magnifies onstage. He has the ability to convey a generosity of spirit in a moment of time. Even more than that he has aura that I have only felt before when in the presence of a Tibetan healer. Just from his hand on my back and I could feel a transfer of energy. The only time I have ever felt that kind of energy is from my ex and that is another kind of story. I am convinced that Adam Lambert is not just an extraordinary entertainer but is truly a force for good in this troubled world.

THE CONCERT

From where I sat, sixth row center, the show was not just on the stage but it filled the room. Lambert's fans are quite entertaining. They dressed up, they drank, they danced, and they had a wild party even before Lambert and his band joined them on stage.

Allison Iraheta was the opening act. I have seen her both at Sunrise, Florida on the American Idol tour and also at Rock My Town in NYC. All I can say is that she has really grown as an artist
and has learned to own the stage and her performance. At the same time, I never connected with any of her songs. I so wanted to have a moment with her, but it never really happened. She has gotten much better and has great potential, but there just seems to be and emotional disconnect to the songs she sings. The songs off her album seem too young for her and her covers seem too old. I would love to see the real Allison. I have no doubt that she has real talent. She just needs to find her voice and get a grasp on what she wants to be as an artist. Once she does that I have faith she can put on one heck of a show.

The concert atmosphere began to change at the end of Allison's set. Anticipation and excitement filled the arena.

As I looked around most of the audience consisted of Adam's loyal disciples. This arena was full of glitter, pretty boys, mothers, fathers, teens, couples of every orientation and age. The one thing every one had in common is that they wanted to suspend reality for a few moments and have fun. The audience sang along to every intermission song and random people broke out into dance in the isles.

There was a fortyish woman in black with stunning makeup that was there alone for her fifteenth show. There was Buderschnookie, a great Lambert fan sporting her new tattoo of Adam's top hat. There was an older gay couple sitting close to the stage. One partner was the brother of Dr. Arnold Klein (Cher and Michael Jackson's doctor) and the other partner was a distinguished looking gentleman who was wearing a dog collar and leash. The leash was very campy and amusing more than kinky. I met one recently divorced mother and it was her first night out alone; she felt safe because she believed she could make friends at the concert. She gave me a smoke and I wished I could have spent more time just talking to her. It was a room of 5,500 people and truth be told I wanted to talk to every one. It was just energy hitting energy. I have been to concerts of the greats from the time I was a child but they were nothing like this.

The media has not talked about Adam's big lesbian following. Adam's tall, dominate, powerful maleness combined with his unapologetic self-confidence as a sexual being attracts women instantly, straight or gay. Lambert is an important figure for all who fight for social justice. "Aftermath," a song Lambert wrote with Ferras, Alisan Porter & Ely Rise has an especially strong message of empowerment that resonates with anyone who has ever felt alone. Lambert's women straight and gay were all out at Hard Rock in forceful numbers all sparkly and glam.

Each audience creates it's own entertainment during intermission. The similarity between any two concerts is the feeling that everyone is there to party together and have a good time. The icing on that cake is Adam Lambert. Adam had to feel the love as he entered the room at Hard Rock. You could see Lambert's joy in performing for the crowd. What a perfect energy exchange.

When Adam hits the stage it is a crash of energy. It is very clear very soon into Lambert's set that the songs as recorded on his album were not fully developed but they got his full creative treatment on stage. American Idol is a very well oiled machine and anyone that signs to any of the company's connected to them has a limited time frame to work with. The tour ends in mid September, the album is out in November, and then the machine moves on to the new cast and show. What Lambert has done is take the songs from a very good album and has transformed them in his live performance. With the extra time they have been shaped and molded into perfection by a brilliant artist.

Lambert's show is very much about an emotional journey. Adam understands that not only dose every song needs a beginning, a middle, and an end, but that every performance dose. It is all a story with in a story. Lambert understands that dynamic with each individual song and with his entire performance. I wonder if Adam is a storyteller of ancient times back to tell his tale again.

The one thing that hit me most at this live performance is that Adam can blow you away with his voice, but the lyrics of the songs he has written have such a deeper meaning. The song that most comes to mind is Aftermath. I felt the meaning of the song when I heard Adam sing it and I felt the love in an arena filled with 5,500 people.

Wanna scream out
No more hiding
Don't be afraid of what's inside
Gonna tell ya you'll be alright
In the Aftermath
Anytime anybody pulls you down
Anytime anybody says you're not allowed
Just remember you are not alone
In the Aftermath

Then there is the voice. Can Adam Lambert be a mere mortal? Isn't it only the gods who can create such musical bliss? Seventy shows into the tour and each song was vocal perfection. Orpheus the greatest musician and poet of Greek mythology, could charm wild beasts and coax rocks and trees into movement but can't Lambert accomplish even more? Has anyone in this generation ever been able to promote the idea that diverse fractions of society, regardless of race, sexuality, politics or creed have something in common? Now that the Glam Nation Tour has headed overseas there will be seas of faces around the world mesmerized by Lambert's talent and his message of inclusion. Can getting along be more simple then that?

P.S.

Sorry that I have been slow to write my review and it has been a sad week. Suddenly it is big news but the media has been slow to report on the rate of suicide in gay teens. I guess this week every local reporter is looking for a national story but the numbers and stories have been around for years and most likely they are under reported and underestimated because all teens do not come out before they commit suicide. A good number carry it to the grave. Studies show that gay teen suicide attempts are four times that of heterosexual youth and they make up 30% of all teen suicide deaths. These kids need to know they are not alone!
