GLASGOW, UK (SCOTLAND)

Tonight's show is at Academy ABC

Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and third most populous in the United Kingdom. The city is situated on the River Clyde in the country's west central lowlands. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Glasgow grew to a population of over one million, and was the fourth-largest city in Europe, after London, Paris and Berlin. In the 1960s, large-scale relocation to new towns and peripheral suburbs, followed by successive boundary changes, have reduced the current population of the City of Glasgow unitary authority area to 580,690, with 1,199,629 people living in the Greater Glasgow urban area.

Glasgow has the largest economy in Scotland and is at the hub of the metropolitan area of West Central Scotland. The city also has the third largest GDP Per Capita in the UK, after London and Edinburgh. The city itself sustains more than 410,000 jobs in over 12,000 companies. Over 153,000 jobs were created in the city between 2000 and 2005 – a growth rate of 32%. Glasgow's annual economic growth rate of 4.4% is now second only to that of London. 55% of the residents in the Greater Glasgow area commute to the city every day. Once dominant export orientated manufacturing industries such as shipbuilding and other heavy engineering have been gradually replaced in importance by more diversified forms of economic activity.

Glasgow was once one of the most significant cities in the UK for manufacturing, which generated a great deal of the city's wealth; the most prominent industry being shipbuilding based on the River Clyde. Although Glasgow owed much of its economic growth to the shipbuilding industry, which still continues today in the form of two shipyards, the city has its roots in the tobacco trade and is noted to have "risen from it's medieval slumber" from trade in tobacco. The city was also noted for its locomotive construction industry, which grew during the 19th century before entering a decline in the 1960s.

Glasgow has many live music pubs, clubs and venues. In recent years, the success of bands such as Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura, Biffy Clyro, Franz Ferdinand, Mogwai, Snow Patrol and Travis or indie bands such as Primal Scream has significantly boosted the profile of the Glasgow music scene, prompting Time Magazine to liken Glasgow to Detroit during its 1960s Motown heyday. More recent successes include The Fratellis and Glasvegas. The city of Glasgow was appointed a UNESCO City of Music on 20 August 2008 as part of the Creative Cities Network.

Glasgow also has a thriving dance music scene spearheaded by Slam, and their record label Soma Quality Recordings. They're also the people behind the very successful Pressure club nights at The Arches which have attracted DJ's and clubbers from around the world.

The Venue
In March 2009, Academy Music Group became the majority stakeholder in O2 ABC Glasgow.
Situated in Sauchiehall Street, the O2 ABC occupies the distinctive Art Deco building and is spread over four floors, incorporating two live music venues – O2 ABC (1,362 capacity) and O2 ABC2 (350 capacity).

Originally built in 1875, it became one of the first buildings in Glasgow to be fitted with electricity in 1888 making it the ideal site for city’s first public film showing in May 1896. It later converted to the Hippodrome and became the home for Hengler’s Circus from 1904-1927, with films being shown out of season. The building was largely rebuilt around this time to become Waldorf Palais Dance Hall until November 1929 when it was re-named The Regal, ABC’s flagship cinema in Glasgow.

Designed by CJ McNair, the huge auditorium sat 2,359 in stalls and balcony, decorated in autumnal colours, with three arches bays on the splay walls, each with painted landscape scenes. The cinemas changed owners and names numerous times, to Cannon, MGM, and of course the ABC, which eventually closed its doors in 1999.
O2 ABC Glasgow is spread over four floors incorporating two live music and club spaces and four bars. The venue launched as a concert venue in June 2005, with live music from Roddy Frame and the Trashcan Sinatras, following an extensive conversion.
