Arts Beat - Big Sean Opens at No. 1 (March 2015) http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2015/03/...esarts&_r=0

"Big Sean’s new album, “Dark Sky Paradise” (G.O. O.D./Def Jam), opened at the top of Billboard’s latest chart, with 139,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen Music. By album sales alone, “Dark Sky” barely beat the next-best seller, Kid Rock’s “First Kiss” (Warner Bros.), which opened at No. 2 with 137,000 copies sold. But recent changes to Billboard’s chart rules widened Big Sean’s lead.

First, “Dark Sky” was far more popular on streaming services like Spotify, with songs getting 17 million plays in the United States; “First Kiss,” on the other hand, had only 580,000 streams. Billboard’s rankings also reflect how many individual tracks have been downloaded from an album, and Big Sean had the advantage there, too, with 218,000 tracks, versus just 85,000 for Kid Rock.

In Billboard’s new rules,
1,500 streams or 10 track downloads are each equivalent to the sale of one complete album. So by that formula, “Dark Sky Paradise” ended up with 173,000 “album equivalent units” and “First Kiss” had 146,000."

Quite simple.  Dont preorder off itunes.  Because it clears all toh tracks purchased.  Just buy the GT track.  Then stream on Spotify.  The streams of Toh album on week of release well be more important though.

"However, in the new configuration, all pre-orders are wiped clean as the clock strikes midnight on the day of the release. Consequently, that title's chart position is determined by what new sales activity takes place on the first day of its release, not all the activity it had generated through pre-orders. This move cuts down chances of landing the No. 1 spot, as the new release will have to get there solely through new purchases on the day of release.

Major label executives say they understand why Apple made the move it did, but that it will take some getting used to. "This is a big move, because everyone in the industry pays attention to the iTunes storefront more than any other store or service," says one major label executive. "No one looks at the Amazon, Google or Spotify music pages the way they pay attention to iTunes."

My plan has crystalized to this:

on 4/21:

1) buy GT on iTunes
2) buy GT on Amazon
3) start streaming on Spotify
4) tweet with "#nowplaying #GhostTown @adamlambert" included as many times as feasable
5) click on all reviews/mentions
6) tweet/share from the article sites
7) retweet relevant tweets adding the text mentioned in 4) if needed...

what else?

I have never pre-ordered music.  Never understood the point.  Unless it's some limited special deal, it's not as though they'll run out.  I just wait until the day the album goes on sale and buy it.

Well, if you want a physical cd to show as soon as possible, I would pre-order.  Hopefully an order through adamofficial would do that?  I'm almost never anywhere near a brick and mortar store to march in and buy something.

Well now I feel stupid.  I said I never pre-ordered thinking of iTunes but of course, I pre-ordered Adam's albums on adamofficial.  Since Trespassing was the last physical album I actually bought, it's been so long I completely forgot how and where I ordered it.  Ooops!

Still don't get pre-ordering on iTunes.

Absolutely! SHAZAM! may be a couple of times/day? Also, someone on ATOP added Youtube, if Adam posts there. So, now I have:

8) Shazam GT a few times/day
9) play GT on Adam's Vivo channel a few times/day

Food for thought. Don't buy the album on iTunes at all. If you do, you can never purchase just singles, because your album will be complete

what about other sources like Barnes and Noble?
