Queen Adam Lambert: Nostalgic fun
The rock legends played hits in Vienna for two hours
09.11.2017

"Let me thank the people I'm allowed to be on stage with today. They are true legends of rock music: Brian May and Roger Taylor! "This announcement by singer Adam Lambert after about a quarter of Queen's show in the Wiener Stadthalle was like a signal. There was a lot of thunderous applause, a standing ovation, a mood like no song before (though there were hits like "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Another One Bites The Dust"). The empathy of the Viennese for this band is unbroken. Because guitarist May and drummer Taylor are not only legends, but also some who, even in their heyday - at that time still with the singer Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991 - were often in Vienna and thus built a loyal, unconditional affection with the local audience In 2015, Queen came this time with singer Adam Lambert. As a "stroke of luck" Brian May has called the 35-year-old American, whom he had met during a performance on "American Idol". Lambert brings - unlike the earthy blues singer Paul Rodgers, with the Queen 2008 in Vienna were - with his tongue-in-cheek exalted posturing, various glitter outfits in silver or pink, a glamorous element on the stage, which also distinguished Mercury. And that not only fits better with the bombastic Queen sound with polyphonic vocals, wide harmonies and the fat guitars, it is part of that and went off at the concerts with Paul Rodgers. More importantly though: Lambert is vocally the best possible approach to the incomparable Mercury. Even in the highest heights, his vocal organ has immense power, in the ballads a touching vulnerability. ::yessss:: Queen and Adam Lambert The setlist offers Lambert every opportunity to shine. And the viewers everything they want. For almost two hours, Queen Adam Lambert has hit the top of the charts in Vienna: [/b]"Do not Stop Me Now", "I Want It All" and "Killer Queen", with Lambert sitting on the head of the metallic robot that once was the "News Of The World "cover graced, and throughout the, perfectly staged show again and again in the LED projections on the stage back wall or the semicircular screen above the heads of the musicians appears. Brian May's obligatory echoplex solo, in which the 70-year-old builds harmonies for his own echo, has the semicircle lowered to the floor and it seems the robot's hand lifts the guitarist into a starry sky, while the one on one Podium behind the semicircle is raised. The most touching moments are the unspectacular. When Lambert and Taylor sing at the front of the bridge "Under Pressure" that reaches far into the audience. When "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" swings through the hall. And most of all, when Brian May is sitting alone at the footstool on the footstool singing "Love Of My Life" and then Freddie shows up in the video and posthumously sings to May's guitar. It becomes painfully clear how much Freddie is missing. Because Lambert's voice is magnificent, but in her clear musical beauty, she also lacks the slightly rough, slightly lewd undertone that gave Mercury's vocals such strong expression and character. It becomes painfully (and also a bit wistful) clear that it is the Never again can there be a triumphant, glorious moment in the Queen's concerts of the 80s without Mercury. Although May and Taylor are still as passionate about working as they were then. And although May's solos sound even smoother here than last year in Linz, and Taylor unleashes the drum duel with percussionist Tyler Warren as if he were a 20-year-old.
However, it is also clear that these are songs that have shaped a generation. Melodies that have passed into the genes of those who grew up with them. Therefore, the nostalgic journey into the past is still great fun. The experience may not be the same as at a concert with Freddie Mercury. But Queen Adam Lambert is certainly the best alternative to not be able to hear these legendary songs live. (Kurier) Created on 09.11.2017, 01:43
