Glam god Adam Lambert is readying the intriguing two-part release of his fourth studio album Velvet. The first half, Part A, drops on September 27. Are we there yet?
Surprisingly though, previous slow burner teasers "New Eyes" and "Comin' In Hot" did not make the final cut, so the newly released "Superpower" serves as the first official taste of the current Queen frontman's anticipated project. Blending the already-introduced 70s rock era aesthetic with 90s alternative pop attitude a la Alanis Morissette, the effort does the best job at making Lambert's artistic desires more radio friendly.
Crafted alongside singer-songwriter Ilsey Juber and producer Tommy English (BØRNS, Kacey Musgraves), "Superpower" shines vibrant light on Lambert's rebellious call to action. Fed up with rampant hate and discrimination, the artist encourages people to stand up for themselves and find pride in their own individuality.
Along with the broader breaking-of-societal-norms context, the artist appears to also vent his personal frustration with past record labels on the fierce anthem. "Try to put me in a box, make me something I’m not, don’t give a fuck 'cause I’m gonna take back, my superpower," he belts on the hook, addressing the difficult path taken toward releasing his upcoming new album.
From the aggressive vocal prowess, delicious funk guitar (also courtesy of English), and vibrant accompanying music video -- where Lambert literally rips his own wig off -- it's clear "Superpower" boldly symbolizes the artist finding his strength again in a business that can easily chew one up and spit them out with no regard. Lambert has finally found his freedom.
Though Lambert's string of recent releases have moved him further from the neon-lit dancefloor, "Superpower" can easily fill in any gaps as a retro ode to defiance, all while tipping a hat at the artist's creative influences such as Prince, Tame Impala, and The Black Keys. Safe to say, it all works.
