‘American Idol’: Adam Lambert and the ’80s cover album debate

While we’ve already tackled one “American Idol” notes for the day, we wanted to make a special case for a story that is currently blowing up the internet as well as the Adam Lambert community: The idea of the singer creating some sort of ’80s cover album for his next disc.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, there is some discussion about having the former singing-show star, who has two commercially-successful discs under his belt already in “For Your Entertainment” and “Trespassing,” releasing his next disc as one containing covers of popular songs from the aforementioned decade. The label at RCA seems to be interested in the idea, after sales for his sophomore album were only around a fifth of what he had for his debut.

Do we imagine that Adam would rock a covers album and make the songs his own? Definitely, since he has already done so at a number of concerts over the past several months. However, there’s a difference between performing one at a concert, and having an album made up of them; and if you ask any Adam fan, they would all much prefer to see more original music. “Trespassing” didn’t have the amount of label support, radio promotion, or tour backing in America that it deserved, and it’s a shame: It is one of our favorite pop albums period from last year, and we’re not the only publication that feels that way. Songs like “Cuckoo” and “Naked Love” could have been something more on the radio, if given the proper opportunity to do so.

At the end of the day, though, this decision is all up to Adam (who has been cagey on the subject recently, though he had previously denied it), and if he feels like he can rock a cover album, who are we to say no to that? What we’d just personally like to see if he goes down that route is maybe a dual release with covers along with original music, since we think that one fear the fanbase could have here is that this album would take away the time needed to create more original music down the road.

Let's imagine Shirley came to me with that article and now I'm returning it to her, with all my observations and questions. Not as a fan, as a journalist. This is how I really do corrections, by the way.

Adam Lambert's Next Album: All '80s Covers?

An as-yet-unsolved mystery of the American Idol alumni world: When will season-eight runner-up and fan favorite Adam Lambert release a new album? And what will it sound like?
(Maddie: Why are we calling it a mystery? Why is this news?)

The Hollywood Reporter has gathered some potentially major intel on what could be the follow-up to 2012’s Trespassing. According to sources, Lambert’s label, RCA Records, is pushing for an all-covers album. Specifically from one highly influential decade: the 1980s.
(Maddie: Interesting. But when you say "potentially major intel", do you have information to back that up? What are your sources? And why aren't we naming them?)

It should come as little surprise considering Lambert’s version of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World,” which he performed on Idol and subsequently on various tour dates, has been heralded as one of the best and most original performances the Fox show has ever seen -- and heard.
(Maddie: True, but that was a long time ago. What does it have to do with this particular story?)

And if Lambert’s July 3 appearance at Hollywood club Playhouse, which doubled as a fundraiser for Trevor Project, is any indication, he already is diving into the task by taking on another Tears for Fears hit, 1985’s “Shout,” which he played that night as part of an hourlong set, as well as on July 2 during a concert in San Diego.
(Maddie: Do we know if that has any meaning at all? Doesn't Adam sing different covers on his concerts? Was this Shout cover something new?)

Asked at the event whether he had plans for an all-covers collection, Lambert stayed mum on any recording plans, saying only, "Rumors are funny little things, aren't they?" But asked which song defines the decade of big hair and glam, he offered "Shout," noting, "Tears for Fears are pretty amazing."
(Maddie: Those sentences are not really connected. His opinions about "Shout" and TFF are not directly related to the idea that he might do a covers album. Please change that part.)

A rep for the singer tells THR, “Nothing has been determined yet” but acknowledges that the idea of a concept album of songs from another era is just one of several currently being bandied about. RCA Records would not comment.
(Maddie: Is this the only REAL information we have? The rep for the singer says that nothing has been determined yet? Also, "a concept album of songs from another era" makes no sense at all. A concept album is one thing, a covers album is another one. And "another era" does not equal the 80's. Also, is this "one of several ideas being bandied about?" I ask again: do we have any real information to back up the title of the article?)

Lambert’s Trespassing sold a respectable 185,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, about a fifth of how his debut, 2009's For Your Entertainment, performed. But many fans feel it fizzled because of lack of radio and tour support. A label source acknowledges that internally, enthusiasm was lacking for the sophomore effort but that the Sony-owned company could get behind a covers collection so long as execs have input into such aspects as song selection and cover art.
(Maddie: Tht number refers only to the US, right? Do we know how the album did abroad? About the lack of enthusiasm, who is your source again? I really woud like to know who we are quoting here. We don't have to publish his name, but it has to be someone with power and credibility, if we're going to go that far.)

As for other Lambert rumors du jour, the possibility of him joining the Idol judges' panel hasn't progressed much, it seems, as he repeated a line from back in May when he told reporters he'd be "thrilled" to join.
(Maddie: It was the reporter that repeated the line, not Adam. Please correct.)

Fortunately, his other passion, the fight for LGBTQ rights, has made serious strides in the past few weeks, not the least of which emanated from the Supreme Court's recent ruling striking down a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act. (...)That exuberance was palpable at Playhouse, where Lambert belted a flawless set that included radio hits "If I Had You" and "Whataya Want From Me," covers like Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze," Lenny Kravitz's "Are You Gonna Go My Way" and Bob Marley's "Is This Love," as well as such album tracks as "Trespassing" and "Outlaws of Love."[/i]

No word yet on when a new Lambert album may be out.

As a journalist, I really can't take that article seriously. Unless there's more information, I'll continue to ignore it.
