"The theme was year of birth," Lambert says when asked why he performed Tears for Fears' "Mad World" on "American Idol." "They gave us a list and that song popped out at me and I remembered the Gary Jules version from the movie, 'Donnie Darko.' It's haunting and beautiful and it gets in your head and the words are amazing and I wanted to do it because I knew it would be different and very non-'Idol' and not showy. I wanted to pull back and sound really vulnerable and just do the song justice and they came up with a great arrangement of it, kind of this ambient, acoustic thing."

Lambert says that Swedish writer/producer Max Martin and his team had already started writing this song when they were asked to send more music for the season eight runner-up's first album for 19/RCA. Whatever he does, we're sure it'll be done Lambert style - with nothing less than the stylish splashiness and over-the-top vocals he was remembered for during his stint on the eighth season of American Idol.
Though he eventually lost to winner Kris Allen, his style and career have endured (Allen was dropped by his label RCA last year).

So much so that Idol hopefuls who are styled like him - guyliner, spiky hair, goth/glam rock vibe - immediately get pigeonhold as Lambert-alikes.

As someone who prides himself on his individuality, does he find the comparisons flattering?

"Of course!" he said.

" Sometimes I find it funny how the comparisons are drawn, though. It's almost as if any guy who has an alternative or flamboyant style gets compared to me regardless of vocal sound or style, or ability.

"I'm flattered that I've left such a strong impression though."

Now that he's winding down his touring, Lambert is set to start work on a new album soon, but is mum on details.

"I will begin working on it later this spring, but I'm not ready to discuss the project," he said.

"It's a surprise!"

Though his previous work has leaned heavily on ballads, rock and dance, would Lambert be up to joining the 'retro' movement currently being championed by Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars (with whom he collaborated on Trespassing)?

After all, he contemporised songs like Smokey Robinson's Track of My Tears and Johnny Cash's Ring Of Fire on Idol.

"Possibly," teased Lambert.

"Everything has been done before, so finding a way to put one's own twist on something classic is always a thrill."

It's no secret we love Adam Lambert and the energy and joy he brings to the otherwise sterile, manufactured world of modern pop music. But he's such a worldwide whirling dervish that it's sometimes difficult to keep track of where and when he touches down. So we're trying out a new weekly feature: Hump Day With Adam Lambert, which will hopefully keep us up-to-date with his appearances, performances, and interviews. And on those weeks when Adam's talents lie dormant, we'll bring you classic pics and performances.

Adam is in China this week, and we have a collection of pics culled from Getty, Glam Nation, and Adam's Instagram account.

This first page is from his March 3rd concert in Shanghai, and I chose these pics specifically because they represent what makes Adam so special. He puts his entire being into each and every performance, and his body language, facial expressions, and Aura Of Attitude all work together to deliver each song. In all of these pics, I keep hearing, "No Trespassers? Yeah, my ass! Wait till ya get a load of me!"

Also, we can tell from this pic that Adam's job description includes dominating fashion (like with blue suits) and maintaining flawless smizes with proper eyeliner application at all times. Now, excuse me while we tweak our resume to apply to be a full-time Glambert. (Adam! HIRE US! We will work for FREE.)

Adam's been on tour in Asia for the last few weeks, and while he's been out catching the sights, sometimes simply taking bathroom mirror pictures is the best way to unwind after a long day of being consistently epic. That, and bathing in that rock star-looking tub in the background. Wait! Maybe Adam could use an official bath drawer -- we'll SO do it! Kinda weird? Sure. On stage, he’s a showman who will put up a no-holds-barred performance.

However, the openly gay American Idol runner-up admitted that the confidence that he exudes is sometimes a mask he has to don as a performer.

Underneath his seemingly fearless persona, he struggles with his insecurities.

Lambert, 31, told the media at the W Hotel yesterday: “Being a performer and growing up doing theatre, I had to pretend to be self-assured.”

Sitting in a small, intimate hotel room at W Hotel, Sentosa this morning and waiting for Adam was a very exciting affair. Arriving late last night in Singapore, Adam Lambert enters the room looking fresh and as handsome and stylish as ever despite having a very busy schedule touring the world. Rocking his signature black nails and guyliner, he looks just like you would imagine him to.
Wow you’re even better looking in real life!
Energy does a lot more than a photo does, doesn’t it?
So maybe we can expect an Adam Lambert fashion line in the future, or maybe an appearance in a musical or TV show. Who knows! But what we do know is that the world really is Adam’s oyster and he is here to stay. Not only is he highly talented, but he’s incredibly grounded, down-to-earth and very charming and an absolute joy to interview.

Adam Lambert: My show promotes love, acceptance, positivity, joy

American pop singer Adam Lambert was apparently unaware that his concert on Friday at The Star Theatre has been the subject of a complaint.

At press interviews today, he emphasised that his show, his first solo full-length concert here, promotes "love, acceptance, positivity, joy, connection".

He landed here on Wednesday, the same day the Media Development Authority gave his concert an "Advisory 16 and above (some mature content)". This means the concert is believed to contain material that may not be suitable for younger audiences, but admission will not be restricted to anyone under the age of 16.

Last Saturday (March 2), The Straits Times reported that the National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS) had received a complaint from a Christian that "the gay lifestyle may be promoted at the concert, and that the concert venue is owned by a church".

Adam Lambert: Prepare to be surprised
SINGAPORE - Adam Lambert fans here - or Glamberts as they are sometimes known - can expect the unexpected whtn the singer takes the stage at the Star Theatre tonight.

“I’m pretty impulsive, I don’t really plan too far in advance so when we rehearsed for this tour, we rehearsed this basic set featuring music from the two albums, figuring out a flow that made sense,” said the singer during his interview at W Singapore-Sentosa Cove yesterday.

Lambert said even he doesn’t quite know what will happen on show day. “We get to sound check on the day of the show and maybe one song we take out and we’ve been working in new songs here and there; covers and other surprises,” he said. “Same thing with the outfits, I’ve got two big suitcases of clothes that I brought and I’ll point ‘I’ll wear that at this part, that at this part and that at this part’. It makes it more fun and spontaneous. There might be some new songs, there might not be, I don’t know.”

Adam Lambert on Friday responded to criticism that he should not have been allowed to perform at a Singapore venue owned by a church.
More than an hour into his 90-minute performance at the Star Vista Performing Arts Center (The Star PAC) theatre in Star Vista, the openly gay Lambert hit back at his critics.
“Someone asked me in an interview, 'Are you promoting a certain lifestyle?'” Lambert told an audience estimated at 4,500. “My answer was, 'The only lifestyle I am promoting is one of love and friendship, music, joy and fashion.' The controversy erupted last week after a compliant was reportedly filed to the National Council of Churches (NCCS), which represents more than 200 churches in Singapore. The center is fully owned by Rock Productions, the business arm of the New Creation Church (NCC), a member of NCCS.
Yahoo! Entertainment Singapore praised Lambert's performance: “The control and poise of his soaring, multi-octave vocal range that took him all the way to the final of Idol season 8 was breath-taking, and it was clear for all to see that the eye-lined glam rocker has grown leaps and bounds as an entertainer since his TV debut.”

Adam Lambert Covered at Choir Competition (Video)

Adam Lambert's music has hit the choir scene, as Clinton High school's show choir Attaché performed two of his songs at the Wheaton-Warrenville Chorale Classic Competition on Saturday (March 9). Attaché is the #1 nationally ranked, award-winning high school show choir from Clinton, Mississippi. The choir is made up of 42 singers/dancers, 15 instrumentalists, and a crew of 12 from a school enrollment of 1,000. Their performance of Adam's track "Trespassing" included not only amazing vocals, but also perfectly-timed, foot-stomping fun in their dance choreography that is sure to impress both Adam and his dancers. The choir also performed Adam's single "Never Close Our Eyes." Unlike the futuristic funky concept seen in Adam's music video, this performance was more glamorous, sounding more like a show tune. Take a look below:

And of course, Adam acquires a pair that almost flawlessly matches the blue suit he's been wearing while DOMINATING on tour in Asia! And if you need more to marvel at, please take note of Adam's hair -- not a follicle out of place! He's been riding rides that whip you around and he STILL manages to serve some coif-perfection realness. Anyway, the only thing that would make this image better is if we had a pair of 3-D glasses that made it look like Adam was with us everywhere we went. Or better yet, VICE VERSA! My father is a huge Bowie fan, and about the time I first got interested in what he was listening to, he pulled out the Diamond Dogs album. The cover was just so cool and trippy and weird. At that point I was really into Halloween and costumes, and when my dad played me the album, I thought, Oh, it’s a Halloween thing. I was maybe 8 or 9, but I didn’t really start appreciating Bowie for myself until my early twenties, when I was getting into glam rock. A light bulb went off—I wasn’t into drag, I didn’t want to dress like a woman, but I wanted to express my gender and artistic identity differently than the mainstream. Bowie was a key inspiration.

It was about the androgyny of mixing it up, and that was what was so incredible about his concepts -- he was one of the first rock stars to really push the idea that sexuality was not black and white but an exploration. Later, when he finally made his big American breakthrough in the ’80s working with Nile Rodgers on Let’s Dance, his image shifted to a more masculine sensibility. Considering how far he had pushed it the decade previous, however, it gave his masculinity an edgy and mysterious undercurrent. I actually love Young Americans so much because it was the album where he jumped into Philly soul and it got very funky and rhythmic; to hear someone with his sensibility going to that place is really inspiring.

David Bowie, by writing a brief article about him for Out magazine.

Bowie released his new record, 'The Next Day', on March 11 in the UK and it's already set to be this week's British No.1 single according to the Official Charts Company, proving that his longevity is down to consistency and greatness.

Writing about the 'Changes' legend, Lambert explains that his father first introduced him to the songs: "My father is a huge Bowie fan, and about the time I first got interested in what he was listening to, he pulled out the 'Diamond Dogs' album. The cover was just so cool and trippy and weird."
