Talk about a showstopping performance.

Adam Lambert appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno to give the debut performance of his new single, “Better Than I Know Myself,” and there’s no other word to describe the performance other than absolute and total “slayage.”

From the finely tuned band, which includes new musical director Kevin Hastings, who used to work with Rihanna, to Adam displaying every peak and valley of his stunning voice, a debut performance couldn’t get any better. If we weren’t already in love, we’d be falling head-over-heels right about now.

“Better Than I Know Myself” leads Adam’s highly-anticipated sophomore album, Trespassing, out on March 20.

It's been a long wait, but countless Adam Lambert fans are rejoicing tonight.

The American Idol season 8 runner-up chose Jay Leno's Tonight Show to debut his new single, "Better Than I Know Myself." The song has been available digitally since December 20, but it was Lambert's first live performance of the track written in part by Dr. Luke and Claude Kelly (an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show is also scheduled for later this week).

The slim and surprisingly makeup-light singer was in fine form for the vocally-challenging song, which stretches the upper limits of even Lambert's super-high register. Clearly well-rehearsed and no doubt eager to get the promotional cycle started -- Trespassing, which THR named one of its 12 most anticipated albums of 2012, is due out on March 20 -- Lambert didn't fudge a note and looked smashing in the process, complete with new spikier hair 'do.

Inspirational superstar Adam Lambert performed his brand new single for the first time last night, January 17, on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

The vocal sensation took to his official Twitter account before appearing on the programme and told his 1.3 million followers to tune in: "East coasters: turn on LENO! Watch my first live performance of Better Than I Know Myself!! #openingnight."

He also sent out a message of thanks to his fans for their unwavering dedication to his career and talent, adding:

"I'm so excited for this new chapter to begin! Thank you to all of you out there for your love and support."

At first, something made me think the whole thing was going to be somewhat understated — maybe it was the fact that this was the first time we were hearing the slick pop jam in a live setting. But then Adam hauled out his powerhouse vocals toward the end, and the audience's knickers collectively dropped to the floor.
